about

From hosting the first illegal raves in Amsterdam to becoming the premier spot for cutting edge electronic music in the Netherlands, Elementenstraat is living proof of the power and resilience of club culture. With its modular, multi-roomed interior––that is tailored to suit every event––this former peanut factory in Amsterdam west offers the intimacy of a nightclub, with an adventurous indoor festival feeling.

History
Origins
1992 – 1993

In the early 90s, Elementenstraat became the weekend home of the Multigroove crew. Between April 1992 and May 1993, they hosted 61 illegal raves that forged the Dutch gabber sound and shaped an entire subculture.

From the DJ booth, legends like The Prophet, Buzz Fuzz, Gizmo, Dano and Flamman & Abraxas pushed the genre forward with a raw, uncompromising energy. Crowds kept returning week after week, forming a tight community that lived and breathed hardcore both inside and outside the venue.

Shutdown
1993 – 2012

On May 15, 1993, the police raided Elementenstraat during an undercover operation. Multigroove’s founders and DJs were arrested, and the venue was forced to close overnight. The raid marked the first and only moment of violence on site.

For two weeks, devoted fans held vigils outside the doors, refusing to let the spirit of the scene fade. But the venue remained shut. Elementenstraat disappeared from Amsterdam nightlife for nearly twenty years, becoming a quiet legend whispered about by those who had been there.

Rebirth
2012 – 2014

Two decades later, Elementenstraat was brought back to life when Duncan Stutterheim, who attended his first rave here, bought the building. The former peanut factory was stripped back and rebuilt into a modular concrete maze with multiple rooms, improved acoustics and a powerful new sound system.

The venue doubled in size, gained a total capacity of 3000 and shifted from a raw warehouse to a purpose-built home for nightlife. Yet despite all the changes, the heartbeat that defined its earliest nights still echoed through the walls.

2014 - now

Since 2014, Elementenstraat has been a cornerstone of Amsterdam’s underground. Four day ADE takeovers, sunrise sessions from Breakfast Club and Is Burning, plus the notorious Katharsis and Unpolished weekends from Reaktor, have cemented its role as a cultural engine.

Today, big-name DJs stand alongside rising underground talent, and every room carries the same sense of community that defined the early gabber years. The venue continues to evolve with the city, offering a space where club culture can grow, experiment and stay fiercely alive.

Multigroove
1992 - 1993

For a year in the early ’90s, Elementenstraat was the place to be every weekend, thanks to Ilja Reiman and the Multigroove crew.

Between April 1992 and May 1993, they threw 61 illegal parties where the Dutch gabber sound was forged. Legends like The Prophet, Buzz Fuzz, Gizmo, Dano, and Flamman & Abraxas carved their names into hardcore history from the DJ booth.

Multigroove’s reign ended abruptly on May 15, 1993, when the police raided the venue, forcing it to close for two decades.
